Rosslyn Metro Station's Escalators
The Rosslyn Metro Station has four escalators, each one measuring a continuous 205 feet, 8 inches in length. The escalators are a tourist destination in themselves. In fact, station managers are constantly asked whether the escalators are the longest in the world.
Rosslyn's length is third among the Washington Metro system's 572 moving stairs, behind the world's longest uninterrupted span at Wheaton (230 feet), and Medical Center (210 feet), both on the Red Line.
A ride to the top, without walking up, clocks in at 2 minutes and 39 seconds. To avoid accidents and general wear on the long multiple web drives, Metro's escalators run at a leisurely speed of 90 feet per minute. Shopping malls typically whisk shoppers away at 120 feet a minute.
